Print Making Dry Point Etching TUESDAY 16 OCTOBER

Workshop description

TUESDAY 16 OCTOBER
10-4pm

WORKSHOP INCLUDES ALL MATERIALS, LIGHT LUNCH AND REFRESHMENTS.

Dry Point Etching is an Intaglio print process and is the most immediate and sensitive, giving you the ability to create intricate and detailed images.
The surface of a plate is scratched by a drypoint needle, this creates a groove and a small burr of ripped material, both help to carry the ink.
Dry point etching is characterised by a soft velvety, fluctuating line.
Historically this process was done on metal plates but now we use acetate, which has the advantages of being able to be cut into different shapes and being thin the plates can be overlaid to create some exciting and unique prints,

Students will use the Drypoint Etching technique to produce their own original printing plates. They will learn how to create soft velvety line work and how to produce darker tones by using crosshatching and different grades of sandpapers. They will then print their designs on to heavy watercolour paper using an etching press and etching inks to produce professional results.
Students will also learn how to use the Chine Colle technique to add colour to their prints.
This is when coloured tissue papers are adhered and printed on to at the same time to create beautiful colour combinations.
