Our pottery classes are perfect for all levels of ability and knowledge.
Everyone is welcome!
Choose one class as a taster introduction to clay, or book a few classes to get started.
If you want to continue your pottery journey why not book the full half term block and get a discount! Please speak to a member of staff to book this for you.
Your tutor, Jane, will cover many aspects of hand-building and throwing on the potter’s wheel over the coming term. If you are new to ceramics then how many classes you book will determine how many skills you will learn. With step – by – step guided tuition in a very relaxed setting you will learn how to work with clay and make outstanding, technically well made finished pieces to use or display at home and perfect to give as gifts!
If you are an intermediate with skills under your belt then you are encouraged to develop your own projects with the tutor’s support and guidance.
Throughout the classes you will learn how to use and experiment with our brush on glazes including the use of oxides, stains, slips and under-glazes.
——–
A beginner can expect to learn : creating stamps and textures, pinch pots, coiling, slab work, tiles, throwing on the potter’s wheel and will use these techniques to make a bowl or vase, jug or plate.
——–
An intermediate can expect to learn about carved relief work, piercing, appliqué and throwing on the potter’s wheel. Looking at texture and appliqué to create a number of vessels. Also developing your knowledge and experimentation of glazes.
There are also other projects and techniques that will develop over the weeks and you’ll enjoy the relaxed and friendly creative atmosphere too!

The class includes buff and terracotta clay, bisque firing and earthenware firings.

Other clays can be bought from our stock but unfortunately, due to kiln capacity, no additional pieces made outside of the class can be fired in our kilns.

Stoneware firings are charged as extra by weight.

If you miss a class that you have paid for during the term then you then can make it up in one of our other classes on a Tuesday morning or Friday afternoon (subject to availability).

Please note: we do not offer the option to throw on the potter’s wheel during taster sessions. Projects available in a taster class will be either coiling, slab or pinch pot techniques. The option to throw on the potter’s wheel is only available if you book onto the full term’s course.

We sell gift vouchers if you would like to give the class or the course as a gift.
This is a lovely class to enjoy with a friend on a Tuesday evening at Westmill Farm.

What should I bring?

Everyone gets the best possible teaching experience and the chance to explore their own ideas, so feel free to come along with sketch books, magazine cuttings, pinterest boards etc. to help focus your ideas from the start.

What should I wear?
Please wear old clothes that can get a bit messy, clay washes out so don’t worry too much. We will provide you with an apron and gloves if needed. Remove any jewellery on your hands and wrists and if possible have short nails and have your hair tied back.

If you require any more information, please chat to our friendly staff on 01920 466446 or email us enquiries@artshedarts.co.uk.
