We have this great new beginners sewing course for you.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or revisiting making this course will give you the opportunity to learn or refresh the necessary techniques to create your own work with confidence.

  • Did you get given a sewing machine for Christmas or your birthday but you don’t feel confident knowing where to start?
  • Have you taken up sewing during lock down and maybe you are in need of inspiration and guidance?
  • Are you uninspired, sewing at home on your own?
  • Would you like to spend time each week learning new sewing skills, getting creative with others in a nice group with great tutoring?

Maria our sewing tutor with over 28 years of dressmaking experience and knowledge as a wedding dress designer/maker has developed this 8 week teaching program..

Week 1. Get to know your machine. Tension, needles, feet, stitches, tools, bobbin and cleaning

Week 2. Taking measurements, understanding patterns and how to alter.

Week 3. Fabrics. Different types and their uses.

Week 4. Seams, zips, hemming, button holes, pockets, bias binding, facings, piping, darts, pleats, elastic, free stitch, stretch stitch.

Once these basic techniques have been developed you will then be able to move onto set projects.

The aim is to make a number of items that create an outfit, up to 4 items that are interchangeable.

Item 1. Making a summer  tunic top with cap sleeves.

(cutting and altering a pattern to size, darts, hemming, facings, bias binding, pockets)

Item 2. Lounge pants/ palazzo/ straight legged.

(pattern cutting, elastic, waist band, pockets, hemming)

Item 3. Kimono wrap.

(Upcycled from scarves)

Item 4. Skirt

(any shape of your choosing, long, short, flared or slim fit)

You will need to bring along your own sewing machine and basic sewing kit.

Some fabrics, threads and trims will be available to use but you will need to buy and bring along your own fabrics for each project so you have the choice of style and fabrics you’d want. Maria will provide time to discuss what you will need, so you have time to get them.

We have large table space for laying your fabric out and pattern cutting.

We have ironing boards, irons and an overlocker.

Maria will be with you every step of the way to help and guide you.

You can’t go wrong if you’d like to learn more about using a sewing machine, make some lovely things and enjoy the Artshed Arts creative atmosphere.

Please check out our Covid safety guidelines we adhere to.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
