We are so excited to launch this fun and flexible Sewing Craft Club at Artshed!

(the whole team want to take part!)

Maria our awesome tutor with over 28 years of dressmaking experience and knowledge as a wedding dress designer/maker has developed a sewing club to suit all abilities and sewing interests.

  • Did you get given a sewing machine for Christmas and not sure what to make first?
  • Have you taken up sewing during lock down and maybe you are in need of inspiration and guidance?
  • Are you uninspired, sewing at home on your own?

Would you like to spend time each week learning new sewing skills, getting creative with others in a nice group with great tutoring?

Depending on your requirements  there will be set projects for you to join in on each week, ranging from dress making to cushion covers, lampshades, bags and cuddly toys

If you are wanting to learn the basics of mending, alterations or pattern cutting, Maria will be able to support you on your own projects, there to guide and help you, from roman blinds, curtains, clothing and pattern cutting. This really is a flexible sewing club!

You will be required to bring a basic sewing kit, along with your own sewing machine: Sewing machine / Fabric scissors / Paper scissors / Sewing needles / Unpicker / Pins / Thread / Marking chalk/pen / Tape measure / Ruler.

Your sewing machine should come with it’s own kit of different feet,  flat, side (for zips and piping) Bobbins, needles, buttonhole foot and free stitch foot (this will be used for applique and artwork)

We will provide thread, buttons, trims, basic accessories and appliqué fabrics.

You will be required to bring along any large pieces of fabric, scarfs, memorable fabrics and up-cycling, based on the project of the week. Maria will advise what you will be required to bring the following week. For example you might need 3 metres of your favourite fabric to make a dress.

Potential projects;

  • Kimono/wrap: made from upcycled scarves
  • Simple tunic top
  • Tote/shopping bag: made from upcycled jeans and curtains etc.
  • Cushion cover, scaps of craft fabric, patchwork and quilting
  • Toy rabbit/teddy/dog :patchwork using either craft fabrics or babies/childs clothing as a keepsake
  • Cross back apron dress.
  • Shorts/trousers/pjs bottoms

These are just a few of the projects that will be available.

You can’t go wrong if you’d like to learn more about using a sewing machine, make some lovely things and enjoy the Artshed Arts creative atmosphere.
